I was born on August 17 1979. My family did not know of my Vision problems amongst other problems, It would not be till 1996 and 2000 that my mother realised why I was not hearing like everyone else, I had Tinnitus and I could hear the blood in my head. We moved to Huntly when I was 9 then came to Hamilton to enable me to start High School. For years I complained I couldn't hear, teachers said I couldn't hear very well either, but my mother believed the Audiologists who said "she can hear perfectly fine". They didn't know what I was hearing in my head, because they couldn't pick it up in the tests. Life as a Deafblind person is hard at times, especially in a group situation, where I cannot hear a thing that is being said, and sometimes I find people too quiet or they speak way too fast. Because of my level of Vision I cannot lip read, but I find in a one on one situation because the person is facing me, I can get most of what they are saying. My hobbies are reading, writing, animals and my friends. I write short stories and poems, I live with my Puppy, Snoopy. My Mother is doing her best to help me join into the community. I go to church every Sunday, Arts for Health on Wednesdays and a group at the Heart Foundation for the Young ones with Congenital Heart Defects. I have many friends who are Deafblind, Vision Impaired, Deaf, wheelchair bound and able bodied, they are awesome. Once a Month I go to a group called Clicking, this is a Disability Mentoring project where Disabled Adults mentor the Disabled youth. I like some sports especially sailing and the Paralympics. One day I wish to make people aware of our circumstances and have more understanding. |
